St. Louis, Mo., 1846, 20¢ black on gray lilac (11X6), Type II, position 3, large margins to in a bit at bottom, exceptionally bright color and paper, light manuscript cancel. Fine. Very scarce, particularly in sound condition.

The Saint Louis Bears are arguably the most popular and sought after of the Postmaster Provisionals. They are also quite rare, especially the 20¢ values. We estimate there are less than fifteen existing off cover singles of the 20¢ grayish blue, of which, at best half are faulty. The above example is one of perhaps five or six sound examples.
