The stamps of the 1902-03 issue were actually rather closely spaced and therefore, did not come with large margins, especially on the scarce high values. This $5 is the exception to the rule and, to the best of our knowledge is the largest margined mint single extant. Fortuitously, it is also perfectly centered.

1910, 1¢ green (374), complete pane of 60 with two imprints and plate #5651. Incredibly well centered. O.g., never hinged. Extremely Fine.
Scott $1,750 + as hinged

A MAGNIFICENT EXAMPLE OF THIS VERY SCARCE AND LITTLE KNOWN FORMAT; BY FAR THE NICEST OF THE ONLY THREE THAT WE HAVE HANDLED.

Because the so-called "star plates" had the outer six rows on each side of the sheet more widely spaced than the middle eight rows, private vending machine companies had problems adapting their equipment to cut the sheets evenly. To accomodate them, the Bureau sold the vending machine companies only the middle eight rows of the imperf sheets of 400, perforating the remaining 12 rows (six from either side of the sheet) and dividing them into panes of 60. These panes were sold over the counter at post offices in Washington, D.C. in late 1912.
