Confederacy, Robert E. Lee, Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, bold endorsement, "R.E. Lee Genl." on a field envelope in a rich deep yellow, addressed in his hand to "Mr. A.G. Mathews/Dublin P.O./Pulaski Co:/Virginia", fresh and extremely attractive, Very Fine.

General Lee acquired from Mathews a riding horse, Ajax, who went with him to Lexington after the war; according to T.S. Dukeshire, this cover originally carried a thank-you letter dated March 4, 1864. The cover is accompanied by an E. & H.T. Anthony carte-de-visite, showing a photo of a lithograph portrait of Lee in uniform.

Confederacy, Thomas Jordan, transmitted copy of message to General Beauregard on South-Western Telegraph Co. sheet dated Mar. 18, 1862: "I will do the best possible about the movement of the trains- the trouble is at Bethel & Henderson where a number of trains are loading up as slowly and perversely as volunteers can do. I have urged Bragg to look at them. That Regiment at Lexington- it appears- I ordered to join its Brigade & it will either come here or more probably will go to Henderson which is nearer even than this place. I have sent a messenger with orders for it to go to Henderson if road is practicable if not to come here forthweith. Yours TJ"; repaired tear, Fine. As Colonel, Jordan was on the staff of Beauregard. Promoted to brigadier general in Apr. 1862, he served as chief of staff with General Bragg.

"5" Confederate rate on 10-Star Flag, Cannon & Verse Patriotic in black on light buff, to Pleasant Hill, Miss., exceptionally fresh and Very Fine. Confederate forces occupied Kentucky south and west of the Green River from early Sept. 1861 until the latter part of February, 1862. Patriotic envelopes were used by soldiers writing home, but examples, often sent unpaid, are rare and choice examples even more so.

Sept 29 date, pencil "Sep. 27, 1862" docketing, cover slightly reduced at left, well clear of postmark, Very Fine, pair Extremely Fine. The Stephens covers were sent to auction on behalf of a descendant as recently as 1976; the group accounts for virtually all the known Confederate Welaka covers of which eight are franked with the 5¢ Green, this being one of the finest.

Confederacy, 1862, 2¢ green (3), horizontal strip of five, positions 1-5, full margins except touching one spot at top right and barely in at lower left, bright color and crisp white paper, each stamp cancelled by grid, matching "Salem N.C. Oct. 7" postmark on fresh brown cover to the Hon. S.J. Bolling in Montgomery, Ala. The right stamps has been partly lifted to reveal a "Paid 10" handstamp, which suggests this was prepared in advance and originally intended for sale as a provisional envelope. There is also a manuscript "13" which was most likely a post office charge account number, the strip effectively tied by offset from this markings, Extremely Fine, one of the greatest 2¢ Jackson multiples paying the 10¢ rate.

Jul. 5" c.d.s. on reverse of homemade cover to Dover, N.C., paying the new 10c rate (increased from 5c on July 1st); strip with light crease at bottom from placement at cover's edge, still Very Fine, a remarkable and beautiful showpiece, the Bright Yellow Green being one the most elusive of General Issue color varieties, especially on cover; this strip is believed to be the largest known multiple, used or unused. Unpriced as a used single and unlisted as a multiple in both Scott and Dietz (cat. $13,500 for normal used strip).
