Fort Snelling May 16, ca. 1855 c.d.s., variety with "Iowa" erased, ties four margin 3¢ orange red (11) on light buff envelope to Enfield, Ct.; stamp with tiny tear at lower right, Very Fine appearance, very scarce.
Estimate 300 - 400

The military post of Fort Snelling was established on Aug. 24, 1819; its post office, the first in present day Minnesota opened May 9, 1828. Part of Iowa Territory from 1838-1846, its unorganized status was reinstated Dec. 28, 1846 and continued thru Mar. 2, 1849, the day before Minnesota became a territory. This postmark, in its unaltered form, was used at the beginning of this last territorial period, and probably during the 1846-49 unorganized period, though no examples have been found. The earliest recorded date of the "erased" postmark is Nov. 17, 1850; this is the latest known example.

Osseo Min. Oct. 7, beautiful strike of this unusual sans-serif postmark on white envelope to Plymouth, N.Y., 3¢ orange red (11), margins to just in at bottom, tied by bold pen squiggle, original 1856 enclosure; stamp with tiny corner crease, still Very Fine, rare usage.
Estimate 400 - 500

Established as Palestine on July 18, 1855, the post office became Osseo on Sept. 18, 1856, making this a remarkably early use. The shade and impression of the stamp, clearly from an 1855 printing, indicates the post office was still drawing on stamps ordered when the office was Palestine. No stampless examples are known with either name.
