Mar. 28, clear c.d.s. ties 10¢ green type II (14), ample to large margins, fresh paper and color, on oatmeal envelope to Middletown, R.I., docketing at lower left indicates this was received Apr. 26; cover with some wrinkling, stamp with diagonal crease lower left, Very Fine appearance, very rare.

FORT BRIDGER, U.T./ March 1. 1858., press-printed straightline postmark ties 3¢ claret (11), horizontal pair, large margins except clear at bottom and touched TL, clearer datestamp repeated at left on rebacked front to wife of Capt. Jesse Gove in Concord, N.H., additional manuscript "Due 3" opposite pair; scattered minor stains not affect stamps, Fine and rare.

Lot 1867

"in camp: near Platte Bridge/ Mailed Sept 13, 57", manuscript note on rebacked cover front to Maria Gove in Concord, N.H. from Capt. Jesse Gove, with two copies of 3¢ brownish carmine (11), margins to slightly in, tied together by pen strokes, received Oct. 28th; some edge wear, Fine and rare usage. Capt. Gove participated in the 1857-58 campaign against Brigham Young and the Mormons. The Platte Bridge post office was established on Nov. 2, 1855. The lengthy contents of this cover were originally published in The Utah Expedition 1857-58 by the New Hampshire Historical Society in 1928. The letter, headed "Camp 48" begins: "I sent you no. 8 from Platte Bridge. I had an opportunity to send it to Ft. Laramie by a gentleman who stopped in camp last night, and you will probably get it much earlier than I expected when I left it at the Bridge." A photocopy of the complete contents accompanies the lot.

"Via Independence Mo.", manuscript endorsement at bottom of front only to Governor Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, Utah Terr., franked with 3¢ dull red (11) tied by "Saint Louis Mo. 3 Feb. 25" c.d.s., pencil note on back states 1853 usage; stamp faulty, Fine usage.

Salt Lake City Utah. T. Jul. 2, bold c.d.s. in blue ties 3¢ claret (11), left margin single, large to slightly in other sides, on cover to Col. Thomas Kane in Philadelphia; light edge wear, Very Fine usage.

Provenance: Chase, Winter

An ardent abolitionist and agent of the Underground Railroad, Kane befriended Brigham Young and accompanied the Mormons on their pilgrimage to Utah; he was instrumental in persuading them to give up their opposition to the U.S. Army in 1858. He was breveted Maj. General of volunteers for his performance at Gettysburg but resigned for health reasons in Nov. 1863.
