Cowlitz W.T./ Sepr. 21st. 56, two line manuscript postmark on 1856 folded letter to Roxbury, Mass. with 10¢ green type II (14), ample margins, matching pen cancel, contents written "in a house of mourning" announce the death of a little boy; lettersheet with some scattered gum toning around stamp, Fine and rare.

Expertization: 1999 P.F. Certificate.

Established on Apr. 29, 1854, the town was located a mile south of present Toledo at a landing on a branch of the Cowlitz River, and was more frequently referred to as "Cowlitz Landing."

Cowlitz Landing W.T./ Nov. 9, bold manuscript postmark on fresh blue 1857 folded letter to Roxbury, Mass., 10¢ green type II (14), ample to large margins except clear at right, matching pen cancel, contents dated Oct. 25th at Cowlitz, Very Fine and rare.

Port Townsend WT/ Oct. 29th 1857, bold manuscript postmark ties cut in 10¢ green type II (14) on white envelope to Jacksonville, Ill. from a member of the North West Border Comm., manuscript "N.W.B. Commission/ Semiahmoo Bay W.T." in a neat hand at upper left, Fine and rare. Port Townsend was established on Sept. 28, 1852 in Oregon Territory.

Scott, Lawrence (2), Leavenworth City (5 including. two with #14), Marysville manuscript with pair on rebacked front, Quindara, Topeka and manuscript Wyanadotte City; Minnesota includes Hastings, Minneapolis, St. Anthony Falls (3), St. Paul (4 including. one #10 and red c.d.s.) and Red Wing; Nebraska includes two manuscript Omaha City and three of same with c.d.s., other covers including. 3¢ from St. Louis to Ft. Kearney with manuscript "For. 3", also #14 on front only from Westport Mo., 1857 to Diamond Springs, Cal.; very mixed condition, Very Good-Fine.

Seward on the Kansas and Nebraska Bill, seven page text in support of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, 1854, accompanied by original envelope with free frank of Seward as U.S. Senator, to Catskill, N.Y.; cover with toned spot at bottom, speech well preserved (pages uncut at top), Very Fine collateral.

Intended as a way to ease tensions between northern and southern factions in Congress, the Act repealed the Missouri Compromise, divided the Unorganized Territory into the territories of Kansas and Nebraska, and allowed settlers to decide for themselves whether to be slave or free. The result was The Border War.
