Lot Photo Description
Lot 1876

Cantonement Gibson, letter headed Cant. Gibson A.T., 20th Nov 1825, from a Lieut. M. McNamara to Col. George Gibson in Washington noting provisioning of troops, accompanied by government cover leaf with which it was filed in Washington, no wrapper or address leaf;. A Very Fine and important Indian Territory document.
Estimate 300 - 400

Cantonment Gibson, Cherokee Nation, Arkansas Territory would later become Fort Gibson, Okla., the first post office was opened there on Feb. 28, 1827. This letter pre-dates that by a year and a half and may very well be the earliest known Indian Territory letter.

The fact that the letter is addressed to Gibson, who was then the Army's Commissary General of Subsistence, and the namesake of the Cantonment and later the Fort, further enhances its historical value.
