Lot 1933
 
[Stand Watie], two covers addressed to the future Confederate general, first with "Office Indian Affairs/ Official Business" handstamp and frank of Wm. Medill on Washington drop cover to "Mr. Stand Watie (Cherokee)" with light strike of red c.d.s. and attached "Free", the other with manuscript postmark "Beaties Prairie Ark. May 29th" and "10" on ca. 1850 folded cover to "Colonel Stand Watie Treaty Delegation C. Nation" in Washington, Fine and desirable pair. At the beginning of the Civil War, Watie raised a company of home guard and was commissioned Captain. Active as a cavalry raider, he fought at Wilson's Creek and Pea Ridge in addition to many skirmishes in Indian Territory and Arkansas. On May 10, 1864 he was appointed Brigadier General. Despite political divisions among the Cherokees that repudiated treaties with the C.S.A., General Watie remained loyal to the Confederacy, not surrender until June 23, 1865.

[Cherokee Nation], 1¢ gray blue (20b), segmented cork cancel on cover addressed to Mrs. S.C. Watie, Vinita, Cherokee Nation, printed corner card of "Mrs. Ann Shelton, Cherokee Orphan Asylum, C.N", reduced a bit at right. Fine correspondence to Chief Watie's wife.

Interior Dept., 1873, 3¢ vermilion (O17), single cancelled by neat circle of wedges, matching "Muscogee Ind. T. May 22" c.d.s. on legal size cover to Chief Charles Thompson at Tahlequah, three line U.S. Union Indian Agency corner card, 1877 docketing reads (in part): "Relating to Colored School on Lightning Creek taught by Edward Derrick", Fine and rare.

Interior Dept., 1873, 6¢ vermilion (O18), single tied by indistinct c.d.s. on legal size to W.D. Bushyhead at Fort Gibson, U.S. Union Indian Agency corner card, Oct. 1876 docketing with note on reverse indicating Muskogee origin; some edge toning and gum staining around stamp, Fine and rare.

United States Express Co. cover, green Topeka, Kna. label on legal size envelope to W.C. Long, Clerk of Kingfisher Council, Kingfisher, Oklahoma Terr., from the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Ry. Co. and marked "val. papers" docketed Feb 2, 1893 and signed for by J.C. Robb, Dep. Clerk, wax seals on reverse, reduced slightly at right and a tad at left, reinforced edges. Fine and rare.
