THE TYPE IA IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF THE CLASSIC U.S. ISSUES, ESPECIALLY SO IN THIS PRISTINE CONDITION.

Expertization: 1999 P.F. Certificate.

The type Ia stamps are by far the scarcest of the perforated One Cent Issues of 1857. With a little background, the reasons become quite clear. Toppan, Carpenter and Co., employed ten different plates in order to produce the perforated One Cent stamps. With 200 positions per plate, there were therefore, 2,000 positions possible. Only 18 of those positions produced type Ia stamps. These 18 positions were located on the bottom row of plate 4, a plate that was in use for probably no more than six months, further reducing the potential population.
