Jul 19, bold strike of red forwarding c.d.s. on 1847 incoming folded letter originating from Le Havre, France, transit markings of Southampton, London, and Liverpool with various paid markings, red Boston Am Pkt c.d.s. and collect 12, letter was forwarded to Augusta, Ga; ink erosion, Fine and colorful.

Fort Dade was established as a Seminole Indian fort along the Fort Brooke to Fort King road in Benton County on Jan 2, 1845. The fort was situated near the site of the infamous Dade Massacre of 1835 where Major Dade and all but two of his soldiers were killed and scalped.

Towson, Paymaster Gen. in Wash., D.C., manuscript "on official service", letter is requesting the paymaster to have pay available for the sender's family in Boston, Very Fine.

Fort Meade was in existence from Dec 9, 1849 to 1857 and was named after Lt. George Meade who later became the victorious General at Gettysburg.

Fort Pickens, Florida, 1849 dateline, legible strike of "Pensacola Flo. Jan 20" c.d.s. with manuscript "official business" to the Watervliet Arsenal in New York, manuscript "10" collect rating added, letter was from Albion Howe inquiring about a soldiers location, Very Fine military correspondence.

Albion Howe was in the army and served in the Mexican War. In 1859, he served under Robert E. Lee during the suppression of John Brown at Harper's Ferry. He was later promoted to Brig. Gen. during the civil war serving with Gen. George McClellan.
