Lot Photo Description
Lot 1
o
Cameroons, 1915, ½d on 5pf green, variety surcharge double (SG B2b), cancelled by c.d.s. Two insignificant pinholes. Very Fine for this. An extremely rare and elusive stamp. Illustrated in Gibbs, page 202. Michel 2DD.
SG £800 ($1,020)

Provenance: Robert M. Gibbs

Although one sheet of one hundred stamps was believed to have been doubly surcharged, Gibbs surmised that the vast majority of these stamps must have been destroyed or lost, since he had encountered only four or five used examples of this variety, all of which were in poor condition. No unused examples have been recorded.

One sheet of twenty is known to have been surcharged twice. From this sheet, five examples- the only surviving multiple (the top left corner block of four) and position 12 ("s" inverted)- are in the Royal collection, thereby meaning that only fifteen stamps with this variety are available to collectors. This corner example is particularly desirable, since it not only shows both surcharges complete, but also part of a third surcharge.
