SG £8,000 ($10,200)

Expertization: 1984 B.P.A. Certificate.

Provenance: The Marquess of Bute and Robert M. Gibbs

After the top half of the sheet had been overprinted upside down, the lower half of the sheet was overprinted right side up, thereby resulting in ten tête-bêche pairs from the first row of each overprinting operation.
Gibbs has recorded eight pairs. Two of these are contained in a block of four in the Royal collection. Therefore, only six or eight examples are available to collectors.
The above pair is the left vertical pair separated from a block of four in the Bute collection (lot 375). Setting 1A is identical to Setting 1, except for position 8, which was reset in order to accomodate the narrow "O" in "Occupation".

GIBBS HAS TRACED FIFTEEN OF THE TWENTY POSITIONS OF THE SHEET. OF THESE, THE LOWER LEFT CORNER BLOCK OF FOUR IS IN THE ROYAL COLLECTION.

Expertization: 1933 B.P.A. Certificate.

This variety was the result of the overprint being applied too low on the stamp, thereby cutting off a portion of the word "Occupation" at the bottom. The printer attempted to remedy this by inserting another "Occupation" above "Togo" by removing the first two lines of this second overprint.
