Lot 26

Mafia Island, 1915, 4h green overprinted in dull violet "G.R. Mafia" and "G.R. Post 6 cents Mafia" se-tenant in a vertical pair (Gibbs 2Ba), the top stamp with the type 1 overprint and the lower stamp with the type 2 surcharge, fresh, o.g., top stamp imperceptibly hinged and lower stamp never hinged, vertical gum crease at right. Very Fine and a fabulous variety of the utmost rarity.

Provenance: Colonel J.R. Danson

This is the left vertical pair of the block of five from the Danson collection (Robson Lowe, 5 May 1971, lot 1438). The two vertical pairs from this block represent the only two recorded examples of the type 1 and 2 overprints se-tenant on this value. There is only one other se-tenant multiple of the two surcharge types on another value, and this is a horizontal pair contained in a block of ten of the 45h.
