30¢ Essays, Proofs & Specimens

Lot Photo Description
Lot 1
E
1861, 30¢ "Premiere Gravure" die essay (71-E1), black on India, "suggested additional ornaments at top and bottom in pencil, as later engraved", approx. 51 x 61 mm. Otherwise Very Fine. Brazer 61Ea.
Scott $1,750

Provenance: Finkelburg

The quotes as to the penciled ornaments are from Brazer and have been perpetuated by Scott. In reality, this essay has had the ornaments partly erased by rubbing on the finished proof, causing abrasions and actually breaking through the paper in a few spots. This was probably done by N.B.N.Co. to see what a "lighter" ornament would look like, but there are clear remnants of the original wider ornament, "as later engraved".
