"Free./For the Regiment/Adams Express Co./Per Hoey", beautiful strike 4-line handstamp in blue on reverse of a Union Patriotic cover addressed to a Lt. Walter Murphy, c/o Capt. Swany, Co. B. Washington Greys, 8th Regt., N.Y. State Militia; cover a bit soiled and slightly reduced at right, Fine.

PERHAPS A UNIQUE USAGE OF THIS RARE ADAMS EXPRESS COMPANY MARKING ON A PATRIOTIC COVER.

This marking was used on mail to and from the New York regiments that were assigned to protect Washington, D.C. at the beginning of the war.

Confederacy Military Prison, Salisbury, N.C., dateline, July 25, 1864 on P.O.W. letter from New York Times war correspondent Albert D. Richardson to his brother in Boston, includes original Flag of Truce cover with C.S.A. 10¢ #11 and U.S.A. 3¢ #65, Sudbury (Aug. 6?) and Old Point Comfort, Va. (Aug. 14) c.d.s.s., manuscript "By Flag of truce boat, Prisoner's Letter" and "Exd".

In the one-page letter Richardson tells of his health ("most of the time has been good") and inquires as to the health and activities of his family.

Confederacy 1862, 5¢ dark blue (4a), crossed gutter block of four. Position UL50-UR41/LL10-LR1, large margins. Lightly hinged toned original gum with few typical gum stains showing through. Minor paper wrinkles. Otherwise Very Fine and rare positional piece.

Confederacy 1863, 10¢ blue (12), Keatinge & Ball printing, mostly large margins tied by blue "Hillsboro, N.C., Sep 4" c.d.s. on Orange County election ballot envelope signed by Sheriff H.B. Guthrie with printed address to the Speaker of the State Senate at Raleigh; refreshed on slightly restored, but a gorgeous Extremely Fine appearing cover, the earliest documented use of the Keatinge & Ball printing.

Confederacy 1863, 10¢ blue, perf'd (12f), gutter block of four. Vertical inter-pane perforations at left side of gutter creating "wing" margins on the two right stamps (similar to British stamps of the period). Some original gum. Few faults. Otherwise Fine.

THE ONLY KNOWN PERFORATED GUTTER PIECE.

Expertization: 2003 C.S.A. Certificate.

Until the discovery of this block in 2003, it was assumed that the Confederacy's perforation experiments were limited to panes of 100.
