Lot 3304

Caroline Islands 1858 (20 Aug.) cover front from New York to Ponape, postmarked red New Paid York c.d.s. with blue manuscript "10", addressed to Protestant missionary, L.G. Gulick, "Ponape, Ascension Isl, Micronesia" in care of Prof. Dewitt Alexander in Honolulu; extensive restoration onto a new envelope with bits of original back, Very Fine appearance.
Estimate 1,000 - 1,500

The American Protestant mission was first established on Kusaie Island in early 1852. Gullick lived in Ponape beginning in December of that year. Alexander was the son of early Hawaiian missionaries and became Hawaii's first Surveyor General.

Caroline Islands 1899 (12 Oct.) 10pf overprinted postal card from Ponape to Shanghai, cancelled Ponape c.d.s. with inverted "12" on the first day of the German Post Office in Caroline Is., addressed to the S.M.S. Jaguar, which was on station in Shanghai until 30 Nov., message is datelined 14 Oct., Very Fine.

Caroline Islands 1910 (10 Feb.) letter from the Postal Directorate in Bremen to Ponape, requesting reimbursement for a 10pf stamp which they had replaced on a letter card from Ponape the previous year. A German 10pf Germania has been affixed to the letter and is dutifully cancelled by a Ponape c.d.s. (5.5), green K.O.P.D. datestamp has been applied upon final receipt in Bremen (4.10); letter folded through stamp, Very Fine and most unusual postal document.

The "Nürnberg" was one of four naval ships sent to quell the Ponape rebellion of 1910.

Caroline Islands 1912 (4 Jan.) envelope to Angaur to Korror, bearing 10pf G.N.G. yacht tied by manuscript "Seepost, K.D.S. Komet, 4 Jan. 1912", Palau receiver dated 1 Jan; file folds and light toning, Fine and rare. The Komet was the government steamer sent from R. Peybach to Winkler, the head of the Palau Station.

Caroline Islands 1914 (7 July) registered value letter from Bremen to Angaur, Palau, bearing two 1902 2mk blue cancelled Bremen c.d.s.s., the envelope, with 2400mks, was from the German South Sea Phosphate Corp. in Bremen to its offices in Angaur via Milan (10.7), Naples (11.7), Brindisi (12.7), Hong Kong (27.8), Singapore and Cebu aboard the Prinzess Alice then by a baggage ship in the Spee Squadron to Palau, Very Fine. 4mk rate comprised 3.60mk for insurance on the 2400mk plus 20pf for postage and 20pf for registration.

Caroline Islands 1914 (7 July) 5pf yacht postal card to Oldenburg, cancelled Truk c.d.s.s., delayed for nine years due to the onset of World War I in the Pacific (actually hidden under the floor of a church!), finally discovered in September of 1923, the card was forwarded to the Naval Postal Bureau in Berlin where an explanatory label (type Ic) was attached (manuscript date 20.9.1923), Fine and rare. Written by Otto Vorwerk of the heavy cruiser "Gneisenau".

Caroline Islands 1914 (7 Aug.) 5pf Bavarian postal card from Kirchheim, addressed to a sailor aboard the light cruiser Emden, handstamped "Zurück" with purple boxed Naval Post Office handstamp indicating that mail could not be delivered to the addressee due to the war, Very Fine. The "Emden" joined the "Spee" Squadron on 12 August 1914.
