Samoa 1893 (1 Mar.) registered envelope from Apia to Wismar (31.3), "via: San Francisco" bearing two 1889 20pf bright ultramarine (V48d); reduced slightly at left, F-VF.

From February to March of 1893 there was a shortage of German stamps in the colony. During that time postage was paid in cash with appropriate handstamped or manuscript markings applied. A rare cover with stamps from this period.

This 1889 handstamp was provisionally employed as a cancelling device from late April until early September of 1895. Two examples of the English version are recorded— both are dated 18 April. Already described in the Berlin 1904 exhibition catalogue.
