German East Africa Cuba, 1877 cover to Schonbach (11.2), bearing Cuba 50c. uncanelled, framed "Aus Westindien/über Newyork" handstamp, "New York, Jan. 27" transit c.d.s., handstruck "10" in blue (crossed out) for the Cuba-New York portion, and circular "T" handstamp and crayon "50" rating (50pf = 12cents, 2c for U.S.A. and 2 x 5c German double rate), carried on the "City of Vera Cruz" to New York and then on the "America" to Bremen, Cuba stamp not recognized since it did not become a member of the U.P.U. until May 1, 1877, Very Fine and rare.

German East Africa 1879 (3 Feb.) envelope, addressed to "U.S. Coast Survey Steamer" at St. Thomas readdressed to St. Vincent bearing Banknote 2c (#158) vertical pair and 3c (#172) horizontal pair, cancelled by cork, 2c additionally tied by "Philadelphia Pa." c.d.s., and on reverse "St. Thomas" c.d.s. (11.2) and 1879 HAPAG 10c for redirection, the 10 cents rate to a non-member country of the U.P.U, Very Fine and a great postal history rarity of West Indies maritime mail.

After HAPAG closed their Hamburg-Havana-New Orleans service in 1879, they ran local lines which mainly carried cargo.

In 1901, HAPAG bought the British Atlas Steamship Company, which connected Central America with New York. The "Alene" was one of the former Atlas Steamship Company's ships acquired in the sale.

Small Eagle 3pf postal stationery envelope from Salzhausen to Santiago, Chile, bearing Small Eagle 3kr and 18kr (Michel 9, 11) pair, cancelled by c.d.s., unframed "Franco" handstamp in blue and handstruck "25" represented the inland postage due in Chile, carried on the first voyage of the "Karnak", envelope a little reduced and slight ageing which affects a few perfs. on the 18 kreuzer pair, Very Fine and a fabulous franking to a rare destination.

German East Africa 1889 (6 June) parcel card from Oliva bei Danzig to Sydney via Bremen (7.6), bearing Pfennig 5pf, 25pf and 50pf (Michel 40II, 43ca, 44b) single and block of twenty (on reverse) with position 43 plate flaw VI "Kleine Mittelspitze oben", rate for a parcel weighing between 5 and 7.5 kilograms was 10 mark with 80pf for transport from Oliva to Bremen, carried on the "Nürnberg", Very Fine.

Provenance: Opitz (Osnabrück), Romanow, and Woitas

In 1882, Woermann opened a line to Cameroun. The line was used for German mail, even though a subsidized line had been refused. A parcel service was established on 26 July 1885. The parcels had to be handed to the agent or brought directly on board the ship.
