Lot 3

1856, 5¢ red brown (12), beautifully balanced margins, bright and fresh. Nearly full original gum. Extremely Fine.
Scott $20,000

AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE MINT STAMP WITH ORIGINAL GUM, ESPECIALLY SO IN THIS EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION.

Expertization: 1961 and 2006 P.F. Certificates.

It is estimated that fewer than 50 examples of this issue have survived in unused condition. Most of the surviving examples have faults and/or do not have gum. [Even the Frederick R. Mayer collection, Matthew Bennett auction 294, did not include a four-margin single with original gum.] The mint single we offer here is one of the finest of this small population.

Lot 5
()
1857, 1¢ blue, type Ia (19), position 99L4, incredibly well centered with the perforations virtually clear of the design all around, rich plate 4 color and a finely detailed impression on bright paper. Unused. Extremely Fine and choice.
Scott $17,500

QUITE POSSIBLY THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF AN UNUSED TYPE IA IN EXISTENCE CLEARLY SHOWING THE DISTINGUISHING TYPE CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPLETE ORNAMENTS AT THE BOTTOM AND A PARTIAL "BURNISHING" OUT OF THE DESIGN AT THE TOP.

Expertization: 2006 P.F. Certificate.

According to our review of Phiatelic Foundation records back to 1945, this is easily the finest unused example of the perforated 1¢ type Ia recorded. Those same records reveal NO exceptional mint examples with original gum.

Type Ia was produced in only 18 positions, all in the bottom row of Plate 4. Perforations are typically cutting into the design at top and/or bottom because plates 1- 4 were not laid out with sufficient space between the stamps to accommodate perforations.
