A special printing was ordered from the American Bank Note Company in March of 1894 to serve as samples for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which had just been awarded the four-year contract to print U.S. stamps. It was produced using the original 1875 Continental Bank Note Co. plates that were still in the possession of the A.B.N.Co. Washington stamp dealer Henry F. Colman managed to obtain a set of imperforate panes of 50 of the sample stamps. He had the panes gummed, keeping five sets imperforate, and having the remaining 45 sets perforated. Colman was indicted by the government for illegal possession of these stamps, but was subsequently acquitted.
