A RARE COMMERCIAL PRE-DATE FIRST DAY COVER FROM THE WORLD'S FAIR CITY.

Expertization: 2004 A.P.S. Certificate.

Contrary to the Post Office announcement, St. Louis and other cities sold stamps to the public prior to the Official April 30, 1904 first day of issue. Apparently, St. Louis started selling them to the public on April 29th, see the endorsement on the following lot. This cover was not recorded in the Berkun census.

1904 Louisiana Purchase set complete (323-327), natural straight edge singles, each neatly tied by individual strikes of the "New York Madison Square Apr 30 1904" circular datestamp portion of duplex cancellations on large cover to Magazine Ala., reverse with "Magazine Ala. May 2 1904" backstamp, endorsed by sender "This envelope was mailed on the same day above stamps were issued…Apr 30 - 1904", printed "Scott Stamp & Coin Co, New York" corner card; some insignificant stamp flaws and light cover creasing (not mentioned in certificates), Very Fine.

Apr 30 1904" Jamaica Plain Station waving flag machine cancellation on cover to St. Johns, New Brunswick, printed E.W. Clark corner card, enclosed letter on matching stationery; couple light stains and stamp with rounded corner, still Very Fine.

A CHOICE 1904 2¢ LOUISIANA PURCHASE FIRST DAY COVER TO A FOREIGN DESTINATION AND WITH LETTER MENTIONING THE "NEW STAMPS".

The letter states in part, "Just about 5 minutes ago, These new stamps came in so you see I am not wasting much time sending to you. They didn't send us any 10cts ones".

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED 10¢ LOUSIANA PURCHASE EXAMPLES WITH A FIRST DAY CANCELLATION, THE OTHER BEING ON THE UNIQUE COMPLETE SET FIRST DAY COVER.

Expertization: 2001 A.P.S. Certificate.

This stamp also bears the same New York Madison Square c.d.s. cancellation as the famous complete set first day cover sent by Scott Stamp & Coin offered in lot 184. This is listed in the Berkun census along with the unique first day cover.
