1861, 5¢ orange brown, type II (30), used with 10¢ green, type V (35), each with handsome rich colors and tied by neat strikes of attractive red grid cancellations (additional strike adjacent) on 1861 folded letter to Paris, France, black "New York '6' May 8" debit exchange c.d.s., red "Short Paid" framed handstamp, red French (5.22) entry and black "16" (décimes) due handstamp, Paris (5.22) backstamp, Very Fine.

A STRIKING USAGE, THIS BEING THE EARLIEST DOCUMENTED USE OF THE 1861 5¢ ORANGE BROWN.

Expertization: Signed and with pencil notes by Ashbrook.

Provenance: Rohloff, Sevenoaks

The 5¢ orange brown was not issued until 1861 and could only serve postal duty until August when the entire issue was demonitized by the Post Office. With this being the earliest documented usage of May 8, it shows the period of use was limited to just over three months. As a result, covers bearing this issue are exceedingly rare.

Reverse with Ashbrook's note, "From San Francisco Sep 5 1857, this is a First Day Use of 10¢ perforated stamp from California - Stanley B. Ashbrook."

There was an off-cover pair of the 1857 10¢ green, type II with a July dated c.d.s. strike from the Fisher collection that is the earliest known usage.
