Estimate 5,000 - 7,500

AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE MULTIPLE OF THIS ELUSIVE PERFORATION VARIETY— NOT PRICED UNUSED BY CAMPBELL-PATTERSON.

Expertization: signed Holcombe, 2006 Odenweller Certificate.

The 2d plate I stamps with government gauge 12½ perforations displaying intermediate plate wear were made by perforating small leftover supplies of the imperforate stamps. According to an article published in the London Philatelist, Robert Odenweller has postulated that these were a trial use of the new perforating machine when it first arrived, and applied to unused sheets of the Large Star watermark paper that had been held as reference by the Colonial Secretary or a similar office, and then either put aside or eventually working into being issued.

Campbell Paterson A2n(V).
Estimate 1,000 - 1,500

Plate II of the 2d was the only new plate introduced for any value of the Chalon Heads during their seventeen year period of issue.

It came into use in late 1865 or early 1866, but extensive retouching of some 36 impressions had to be carried out in late 1867, since careless handling had resulted in the nickel coating of those impressions, which were from the lower part of the sheet, being stripped away.

Campbell Paterson A2n(X).
Estimate 4,000 - 5,000

Expertization: clear 2006 Odenweller Certificate.

Provenance: Henry Ruben

These Provisional Imperforates came about as a result of the breaking of the pins of the 12½ comb machine and the eventual conversion of the perforating instrument to line perforation. While the perforator was withdrawn from service for repair, stamps were issued imperforate. This occurred during three very brief but distinct periods.

This was originally believed to be a 3d brown-lilac rouletted 7 at Auckland (SG 52, C-P A3a(Z) and has a clear 1986 R.P.S.L. Certificate ("After Consultation") to that effect. Subsequent detailed examination by Robert Odenweller led him to the conclusion that this is, in fact, the First Provisional Imperforate lilac of 1866-67 with margins that bear some similarity to roulettes.
