Baltimore, Md., 1845, 5¢ black on white (3X1), single, three full frame lines, clear to slightly in at top, cancelled by pen and tied by blue "Baltimore Md. Feb. 21" c.d.s. on 1846 folded letter to Philadelphia, matching "5" in oval and "Paid" handstamp; stamp with pressed-out vertical file crease, Very Fine appearance.

Baltimore, Md., 1845, 5¢ black on bluish (3X3), position 12, margins showing parts of all four frame lines, small preprint paper fold at left, cancelled by pen squiggle and tied by blue "Paid" handstamp on buff cover to Richmond, Va., matching "Baltimore Md. Feb 24" c.d.s. and 2nd strike of "Paid", 1846 enclosure; stamp with trivial gum toning, envelope neatly opened on three sides, still a Very Fine and rare usage.

Baltimore, Md., 1845, 5¢ blue (3XU1), clear strikes of provisional markings including the Buchanan handstamp in black, cancelled by mostly clear strike of "Baltimore Md. Oct 25" c.d.s., addressed to Washington, D.C.; trivial water stains at top and bottom edges, otherwise Very Fine.

Mar 7" c.d.s. with matching "Paid" handstamp and manuscript "10" rating, Very Fine.

"Via Nicaragua / Ahead of the Mails", red framed handstamp on 1853 printed circular (additional handwritten message) to London, England bearing 3¢ dull red (11) four margins, and 12¢ black (17) three margins, cancelled by three strikes of "20" debit handstamp with additional strike at right, endorsed "P Cortes Via Nicaragua", British due rating also ties 3¢; vertical file fold, a Very Fine usage.

A STUNNING AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE "VIA NICARAGUA" USAGE TO AN OVERSEAS DESTINATION.

Upon arrival in New York City, the "20" debit rating was used to cancel the stamps in accordance with the regulation that partial payment was not accepted for British mail. The sender may have misunderstood the rates thinking the 1853 15¢ rate to certain German States applied to Britain.
