1788 (Jul. 24) Marietta, dateline on folded letter addressed to Josiah Harmar, Brigadier General and Commanding Officer at Fort Harmer, endorsed "Answered July 25th, 1788", internal and fold separations, Fine, early usage in Northwest Territory.

1793 (Nov. 25) Fort Washington, endorsement on folded letter addressed to the accountant of the Department of War at Philadelphia, manuscript "20" rating, letter reads "Address all the money you may send out to care of Capt Jno Peirce commanding Fort Washington. He has also control of the relays of expresses from here to headquarters 80 miles advanced"; fold tape reinforcement, tape stain mostly on flap, Fine.

This letter was sent two years prior to the opening of the Cincinnati post office and shortly after the first settlers arrived in 1789. It was probably carried by military courier until reaching a town with a post office.

Ebenezer's letter questions, "why Comstock & Payne had not paid the note that you have against me. They called on your brother at Providence to arrange payment." Ebenezer was commanding officer of the 2nd Mass. Regiment in the Revolutionary War and in Glover's Brigade at Trenton, Princeton, and Mammoth.

1800 (Feb. 20) Bellepre, N.W.T. to Philadelphia Pa. via Marietta, folded letter datelined "BellePre Feby. 4 1800" from Col. Nathanial Cushing to Dwight Foster, Member of Congress Mass. at Philadelphia, entered the mails at Marietta with manuscript "Marietta, 20 Feby." postmark and matching "Free" rating. Very Fine and choice.

Letter Col. Cushing mentions that he had sent an assortment of seeds to the Congressman from Brookline Mass. He discusses each type and the ground they grew in. These include, pawpaw, May apple, wild plum tree, persimmon and several others.

A Delegate from the Territory Northwest of the River Ohio; born in Wareham, Plymouth County, Mass., February 28, 1762; prepared for college by tutors; was graduated from Harvard University in 1785; studied law in Windham, Conn., and was admitted to the bar in 1787; moved to the Northwest Territory in May 1788 and engaged in the practice of law at Fort Harmer.
