Scott $10,000

AN EXCEPTIONALLY ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE TYPE IB, FROM ONE OF THE TWO BEST POSITIONS.

Expertization: 1987 APS Certificate noting corner crease but not tear or position.

Lot 323
o
1851, 1¢ blue, type Ib (5A), position 8-9R1E, an exceedingly rare horizontal pair of this scarce and difficult type, the left stamp being one of the two best examples of the Type, showing the lower left plume entirely complete, mostly large margins to close at bottom left, deep rich color characteristic of the later printings of Plate 1E, manuscript strokes cancel, Extremely Fine. Pairs of strictly type 1b stamps are extraordinarily rare as there are only four position combinations on the plate that can possibly yield a type 1b pair.
Scott $12,000 as singles

THE BEAUTIFUL FRESH COLOR, EXCELLENT MARGINS AND LIGHT CANCEL WHICH LEAVES THE ALL-IMPORTANT TYPE CHARACTERISTICS COMPLETELY UNOBSCURED ALL CONTRIBUTE TO THE DESIRABILITY OF THIS RARE POSITION PIECE.

Expertization: signed Ashbrook and accompanied by 1977 and 1994 P.F. Certificates.

Provenance: A. M. Smith

Lot 324
o
1851, 1¢ blue, type Ic (6b), relief "F", position 96R4 with curl in "C" variety, large margins to barely touched at upper left with large part-sheet margin at bottom, bright color and very light blue cancel, couple very faint diagonal creases, invisible from front; choice, Very Fine appearance.
Scott $10,000

AN EXTRAORDINARY EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE TYPE IC — POSITION 96R4 IS CONSIDERED BY SPECIALISTS TO BE ONE OF THE TWO FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE TYPE.

Expertization: 1996 PF Certificate noting position but mistakenly noting Scott number as 6.

There are eight positions on plate 4 that produced type Ic stamps. Six of those are "E" reliefs, while the other two are "F" reliefs from the bottom row of the right pane. The latter two, positions 91R and 96R, are considered to display the finest type characteristics.

Lot 326
o
1851, 1¢ blue, type II, small break at bottom (7var.), position 1R1E, also showing a major double transfer, bright and fresh with full to oversize margins, including sheet margins at left and top, centered strike red Albion N.Y. c.d.s., Extremely Fine and quite striking.
Scott $190 ++

AN EXTRAORDINARY EXAMPLE OF THIS UNUSUAL SPECIALIST VARIETY — THE ONLY ONE CERTIFIED AS SUCH BY THE PHILATELIC FOUNDATION.

Expertization: 2006 PF Certificate noting the position and the variety.

The break in the bottom frameline exists in the original entry of position 1R1E onto the plate; it is not a "transitional" position that evolved from a type II into a type IIIA as the plate wore. Technically, it could be classed as a type IIIA, though not considered so by Ashbrook nor any of his successors. The bottom line was strongly recut on the late state of the plate.
