Miner's Coat of Arms, illustrated comic miner's cover published by Barber & Baker to Crowland, Canada, red "Marysville Cal. 15 Paid Sep. 4" c.d.s. struck twice, additional manuscript. "Oroville Aug. 30th/55" written vertically at right edge, red "United States Paid 6D" with manuscript. "9" written over 6, original enclosure is Hutching's California Scenes. The California Indians, James M. Hutchings, 1854, Sun Print, with 8 wood engravings by Anthony & Baker, 2 ½ page letter datelined "Lynchburgh Sunday Aug. 19th 1855" with chatty detailed letter from miner to his brother, instructions to send letters to Oroville; cover with tiny edge tears, lettersheet with small separations at folds, Fine and very rare, approx. 12 examples of this lettersheet are recorded.

Up Hill Work, miner balancing well-filled pan of gold on his head, on Wide West Office cover with manuscript. "Red Bluffs Cal. Oct. 27th 1854" postmark, to Wisconsin and franked with 1851 3¢ dull red (11A) pair, margins to cutting at TR, bold pen squiggle, cover with small edge tears, Fine and rare.

Mokelumne Hill Cal. Apr. 27, c.d.s. on 1864 cover to Mornant, France with cameo corner card, "Prospecting Miners" in blue, franked with 3 copies of 5¢ brown (76) tied by circles of wedges and originally folded over edge of bottom, red New York 12 exchange postmark and multiple backstamps; cover aged at sides with bottom flap opened out slightly to show stamps unfolded, Fine, rare late usage of this miners' corner card.

Prospecting Miners, cameo corner card of two miners panning for gold, in blue, on white envelope to Pennsylvania with manuscript. "Goodyears Bar Cal. April 25th" and manuscript. "10" rate, cover expertly repaired at edges incl. flap tear and careful strengthening of ink in postmark, Very Fine appearance, exceedingly rare.

Forty-Niner and Smithsonian, Magnus-style patriotic in violet brown on cream, 3¢ rose (65) tied by "Rowelesburg Va. May 15" c.d.s., sender has added addressee's initials and presumably his own in pen above the central vignette; stamp with light vertical crease from fold, Very Fine appearance. A very rare design.

California Gold Rush letter, folded letter postmarked San Francisco, Jan 31, 1850 with boxed "40" and matching "Paid", from an Edward Norton to attorney Edwards Pierrepont in New York, describing conditions in San Francisco, "…the strangest place just now in the world…", he notes that "…the rents are grotesquely high & prices of every thing else are in proportion, for example an office here rents for about the same per month that a similar one in Wall Street would per year." and goes on to tell of an acquaintance who just went to a "[Y]Uba Ville…a starting village among the mines…where he was at once elected Alcalde an office out of which he hopes to make some twenty thousand dollars…and as also purchased some lots there with a like hope." finally Norton offers Pierrepont a chance to buy a one third share in a real estate deal for $1,000, recommending that he do it only "…for the fun of the thing just to see what might happen without considering it as a resource laid up for your old age." The letter is clean and very readable, F-VF and quite fascinating.
