Hawaii, Honolulu*U.S. Postage Paid" July 28, red c.d.s. on re-rated cloth-lined envelope to Boston, carried by the Francis Palmer, red pencil "13" struck over by "Paid" handstamp, "22c" written next to it (10c x 2 + 2c ship captain's fee) with San Francisco c.d.s. at lower left, 1855 docketing indicates this was sent by Samuel Castle at Honolulu, Very Fine.

Provenance: Rust, Pietsch

Samuel Northrup Castle arrived in Honolulu in 1837 as part of the 8th Company of American Missionaries. Along with his partner Amos Cooke, he founded the company Castle & Cooke, which began as a Honolulu store in 1851. As one of the Big Five companies, they invested heavily in the islands' sugar industry, eventually acquiring both the Dole Food and the Standard Fruit Companies.

Apr. 3" double circle at right, and a 2nd one struck at top dated Apr. 10 when the cover left by Panama-bound steamer, neat 1867 docketing on reverse indicates the contents were written at Wailuku, March 3, Very Fine, a beautiful mixed franking showpiece.

Hawaii, 1866, 5¢ blue (32), target cancel, matching "Honolulu Hawaiian-Islands Aug. 7" large c.d.s. on cover to Boston Mass. with U.S. 10c Green F. Grill (96) tied by circle of wedges, clear San Francisco c.d.s. and red "Hawaiian Steam Service" small oval struck at center; 5c with several short perfs and small corner crease from placement at edge, contemporary ink splatter affects Honolulu datestamp and may have been an attempt at deletion somewhere in transit since the Hawaiian postage is paid (another example of a cover with an incorrectly struck black c.d.s. was in the Advertiser collection, Lot 2231), Fine and very scarce mixed-franking.

Lot 1064

Hawaii, 1866, 5¢ blue (32), horizontal strip of three, tied by very bold strikes of the 7-bar open grid on 1867 cover to Lyndonville, N.Y., magenta "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Dec. 28" c.d.s. and San Francisco, 1868 docketing at top, "Hilo P.O. Hawaiian-Island Dec. 19" applied on back over all four flaps as usual, strip shows additional square grids and a not quite readable small c.d.s. on the center stamp, top flap refolded by sender to accommodate the contents, Very Fine, rare usage. The Ishikawa and Pietsch collections had a matching usage to Mabel Coan in Niles, Mich., mailed the same day by the sender of this cover, both prepaying the 5c Hawaiian + 10c U.S. for the Hawaiian Steam Service rate, to be put aboard the steamer Idaho, which left on Jan. 20. Instead, this was placed on the D.C. Murray, a non-contract ship.

Hawaiian-Islands Jan. 7" c.d.s. tying all four flaps, Honolulu Jan. 18 c.d.s. and San Francisco postmark dated Feb. 8, cover lightly cleaned and expertly repaired at left, Very Fine appearance. Franked for Hawaiian Steam Service, it most likely went by non-contract ship instead.
