1902, 13¢ purple black (308), absolute perfection in centering within unbelievably large margins for this value, exquisitely fresh with gorgeous color and unblemished never hinged original gum, a Superb jumbo. SMQ $2,700 as a 98, unpriced in 100 and 100J.

Provenance: V. Moris, "Westchester"

Were this the 1¢ value of the 1902 issue, we would be astounded by its existence. How much more so then, this 13¢.

The 1902 issue produced small margined, unusually poorly centered stamps. In fact, the PSE has awarded only one other stamp of the issue the coveted grade of 100J. For this reason, we would suggest this stamp as one of the most memorable of the Golden State collection.

This is an exceptional stamp and one we believe would be difficult to improve upon. Given its complete lack of distractions (nibbed perforations, inclusions and other such issues) we feel a higher grade would be in order.

The Louisiana Purchase issue is the middle of the first three Commemorative sets to be issued at the beginning of the 20th century. Each one of these sets share two traits: worse than usual centering and smaller than usual margins. Which is why an experienced collector, upon viewing this example, will immediately appreciate the awesome quality of the 3¢ offered here.
