Danish West Indies, 1790 (May 10) St. Croix to Scotland, datelined folded letter endorsed "pr. Capt. via Glascow" to the east coast near Arbrouth, "Greenock/Ship" postmark and manuscript "1/3" rating, red "JY/1" arrival Bishop mark on reverse, docketed as received July 3, 1790; Very Fine.

The letter is from a lady on St. Croix writing to her brother that she is making her will and leaving the Islands in two months, to return to Scotland with £10,000.

THIS IS THE LATEST RECORDED TORTOLA TRANSIT MARKING ON A DWI LETTER.

British packets returning to England from Barbados stopped at Tortola, and mails from DWI reached there by private boat. In April 1807, the "second packet" began to also call at St. Thomas on its return from Barbados to England, although the official British Postal Agencies did not open in St. Thomas until late 1808 and in St. Croix until July 1810.

This is the first St. Thomas postmark, applied by the British packet agency beginning in 1809. The DWI post office did operate continuously from 1807-1917 for internal and external mails. Prior to 1877, the British French and Spanish also had foreign post offices operating.

ONE OF ONLY 14 RECORDED COVERS WITH THE ST. CROIX FLUERON.

This May 28, 1813 letter bemoans the failure of the addressee, William Tower Esq., to respond to earlier business letters about sugar and rum. The ship from England "must be taken or lost". (Perhaps "taken" by the Americans in this year of the War of 1812).

Danish West Indies, 1817 (Sep. 13) St. Croix to Dublin, Ireland via Falmouth, datelined folded letter bearing fine strike of green "Leeward Islands, F, 24 OC 24, 1812" rimless postmark, manuscript "2/6" rating for double the 1 shilling packet rate plus 6d inland postage, readdressed to Castledermot and re-rated "2/11" to include 5d forwarding postage; some toning and front panel separating, Fine and scarce.

The "Leewark Islands F" mark was used in Falmouth for packet letters arriving from the Danish West Indies during 1808-1841. Seventeen letters with this marking are recorded, with only 7 during the first use cycle of 1808-1817. Most were destined for London.

Danish West Indies, 1819 (Apr.) St. Croix to Aberdeen, Scotland, folded cover bearing "St. Thomas" straightline handstamp, endorsed "packet", red London "May, B 6 M 1819" arrival c.d.s. with manuscript "7/9" triple rating for three times the 1s 2d packet rate (3s 6d) to London plus three times the 1s 4d inland postage (4 sh), "1/2" (1s 2d) framed handstamp for the Scotish toll road tax instituted in 1813 for mail coaches traveling in Scotland, clean and Very Fine.

Provenance: Schnell

At the end of the British occupation of the Islands in 1815, the British postal agencies in St. Thomas and St. Croix were closed. The office at St. Thomas was reopened in 1817, and straightline postmarks in black are found from May 1817 to September 1820. The agency was then closed again, and no British marks of St. Thomas are known between late 1820 and January 1843.

This is the last month of use for the St. Thomas straightline postmark. The "ST" of the handstamp shows progressive damage and now appears here to read "st."

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS SMALL ST. THOMAS GREEN STRAIGHTLINE HANDSTAMP.

The green "St. Thomas" straightline markings were applied upon arrival at Falmouth on loose packets letters arriving from St. Thomas, and are only recorded during the 1840-41 period. Most letters during this period had the boxed "Packet Letter" markings.

THIS IS ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED 1854 2D. BISECT USAGES, THIS BEING THE ONLY ONE TRANSITING ST. THOMAS.

Provenance: Schnell

This letter was carried by the ship "Conway" from Barbados to St. Thomas, and transferred to ship "Merlin" via Bermuda to Newfoundland.

Due to a shortage of 1d stamps, Barbados authorized the use of 2d bisects during this time period.

The British Post Office closed on August 30, 1877. This cover was carried on the R.M.S. "Ebro", which was the last trip of the Royal Mail Steamship Company before the office closing. D.W.I. entered the U.P.U. on September 1, 1877.
