Danish West Indies, 1905, 5b green (Facit 32), single (rounded perf), pair and strip of three, all tied by strikes of "St. Thomas 13/11 1907" c.d.s. on large homemade wrapper to Copenhagen, Denmark, Valby (12.7) arrival backstamp; reduced a bit at left, Fine and scarce 30b. franking prepaying six-times the 5b. printed matter rate. Danish West Indies, 1905, 5b green (Facit 32), tied by "Christiansted 31/3 1917" on small cover used locally, endorsed "Transfer-Day 31/3 1917", clean and Very Fine. Scott 31.

A CELEBRATING USE ON TRANSFER DAY.

The strategic location of the islands as a naval base to protect the Panama Canal became apparent as World War I neared American shores. Negotiations which had been going on for decades were concluded, and the United States purchased the islands from Denmark for $25,000,000. At 4:00pm, March 31, 1917, the Danish flag was lowered and the Stars & Stripes was raied at Government House Park in St. Thomas.

The St. Thomas Harbor issue of 1905 consisted of 1, 2, and 5 france stamps, depicting the cruiser Ingolf in the harbor at Charlotte Amalie. These stamps were issued just after the lower value issue honoring the 40th anniversary of the reign of Christian IX. They were intended primarily for parcels, so that covers are uncommon.

AN EXCEPTIONLY RARE COMMERCIAL USE OF THE 5FR HARBOR ISSUE THAT IS CORRECTLY FRANKED.

Expertization: 1988 Moller Certificate.

The 10fr franking correctly prepays the sea rate of 2fr for up to 4kg plus ½fr for both country of origin and destination plus the four transit countries each ½fr for a total of 5fr per parcel.
