Canada, 1852, Beaver, 3d red (Unitrade 4), large margins except closer at top right, tied by blue concentric rings cancel on blue folded letter to Ayr, matching "Blantford, AP 2 1853" c.d.s., reverse with "Ayr C.W., AP 4 1853" c.d.s., cover turned and mailed with "Ayr C.W., AP 6 1853" c.d.s. and matching "3d" circular due handstamp to Woodstock, C.W.; file fold at center, Very Fine and scarce turned use. Scott 4.

Canada, 1852, Beaver, 3d red (Unitrade 4), four margins, tied by concentric rings cancel on buff cover to Quebec, pretty red "Pierreville L.C." circular postmark with manuscript. "9th July, 1855" dating, Williamhenry (7.9) and Quebec (7.11) backstamps, an Extremely Fine gem use. Scott 4.

Canada, 1852, Beaver, 3d red (Unitrade 4), full to huge margins at bottom, bright color, two tiny edge tears, tied by gray-blue target cancel on mourning cover to Seymour East, matching gray-blue "Belleville U.C., Sep 13 1855" c.d.s. and matching "Too Late" straightline handstamp, "Seymour-East C.W., SP 15 1855" arrival backstamp, Fine, the cover was posted after the mails closed for the day. Canada, 1852, Beaver, 3d red (Unitrade 4), two singles with balanced margins, tied by clear strikes of numeral "1" four-ring cancels on blue registered cover front (top flap only) to Montreal, "Barre C.W., 19 Aug 1857" c.d.s., red "Registered" straightline handstamp, partial Grand Trunk and Montreal (8.20) backstamps; file folds slightly affect stamps, six pence double weight rate plus 1d registry fee paid in cash, Very Fine with choice strikes of the four ring numerals. Canada, 1852, Beaver, 3d red (Unitrade 4), lovely horizontal pair, clear to mostly wide margins with particularly fresh color, lifted and hinged for identification, tied by concentric rings cancel on yellow legal-size cover to Toronto, matching "Thorold U.C., JA 15 1859" c.d.s. and "Registered" straightline handstamp, Toronto (1.17) backstamp; couple vertical file folds, an Extremely Fine and eye-catching use, one of only a few recorded double-rate domestic registry covers franked with stamps. Scott 4.

Provenance: Carrington

The registry system was set up in Canada to encourage its use in sending money or valuables as the fee was only 1d, which was to be prepaid in cash only. It was not until the fee was raised to 2d in July 1859 that the fee could be officially paid with stamps.
