Canada, 1859, Beaver, 5¢ vermilion (Unitrade 15), strip of three, tied by numeral "28" four-ring cancels on small cover to Grand Rapids, Mich., "Paris U.C., FE 2 '60" origin c.d.s., matching "Registered" straightline handstamp, reverse with "Paris D.P.O." c.d.s. on the same day and Windsor (2.3) c.d.s.; reduced a bit at left, a Very Fine use, prepaying the 10¢ rate plus 5¢ registry, one of only 16 recorded examples of this franking. Canada, 1859, Prince Albert, 10¢ black brown (Unitrade 16), bright, rich color and sharp impression, used with 5¢ vermilion (15), canceled or tied by concentric-rings cancels on neat 1860 cover to Grass Valley, Cal., matching "Eramosa U.C." postmark with manuscript "Aug 30/1860" dating, reverse with "G.W.R./East" (8.26) and Guelph (8.30) transits; the envelope a bit reduced at right and tiny patched central hole, Very Fine and remarkable 15 cents rate cover for over 3000 miles to California which was in effect until June 30, 1864. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED DOUBLE WEIGHT LETTERS TO BRITISH COLUMBIA AND THE ONLY ONE BEARING THIS FRANKING.

This cover was sent to New York, then by U.S. packet to Panama, Panama railroad from Aspinwall, then by packet to San Francisco and then to Portland, Oregon by ship, and finally by stage to British Columbia.

The 25¢ per ½ ounce rate was effective January 1862 to June 1864.

July 1864 to June 1870) via the U.S. transcontinental route. Scott 18.

Canada, 1864, Queen Victoria, 2¢ rose (Unitrade 20), tied by target cancels, along with a pair and four singles of the 1¢ rose (14) and a single 5¢ vermilion (15), on small registered cover to Island Pond, Vt., matching "Embro C.W., NO 16 '66" ("15" changed in manuscript to "16") and strike of black "Registered" straightline, the Embro c.d.s. is struck under the 1¢ at lower left and part of the "Registered" straightline that ties the 1¢ pair at top is underneath the 2¢ pair, indicating that the sender decided to pay the 5¢ registry fee with stamps, made up by the pair of 2¢ and a 1¢ after initially intending to pay it in cash, reverse with Beachville, C.W. (11.16) and "G.W.R., West" (11.16) transits; some perf flaws due to edge placement, tiny tear at the lower left, Fine and scarce use prepaying the registry fee. Scott 20.
