Circle of Wedges (Weiss TR-W17), two bold strikes, tie 2 vermilion (178), vibrant color, and 3¢ green (158), s.e. at right, on cover addressed to A. August Adee as Secretary of the U.S. Legation at Madrid, Spain, red "New-York Sep 5" exchange c.d.s., Madrid 1876 arrival backstamp; partial flap, Very Fine.

Provenance: Weiss

Alvey Augustus Adee (1842-1924) was a long-time official with the United States Department of State who served as the acting Secretary of State in 1898 during the Spanish-American War and later Boxer Rebellion. He was the second of three senior State Department officials--the first being William Hunter and the third Wilbur J. Carr--whose overlapping careers provided continuity and good management in American foreign policy for over a century, from the administration of President Andrew Jackson until that of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

THE ONLY RECORDED STRIKE IN BLACK OUT OF FIVE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS UNLISTED THREE-BLADED KILLER.

This is the only recorded example of this killer in black, the other four covers are in red and sent by supplementary mail. This was carried on the Guion Line "Wisconsin" arrived at Liverpool on October 14, 1872.

The 4¢ prepaid the 15 grams British open mail rate to France. This letter was carried by the Guion Line "Nevada" that departed New York on June 5, 1872. While enroute to Queenstown, Ireland the vessel ran aground in fog half a mile east of Roche's Point. The Nevada's mail was landed at Queenstown on June 16th. The "Nevada" was refloated and arrived June 18th.

Experts are trying to solve the "what is it" question. We feel it is a crude negative "H", but others have suggested a mug. The recorded covers are from December 12 to December 14, 1872.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS UNLISTED KILLER.

This newly discovered NYFM was documented by Dan Richards in his article "NYFM Update, Part 2". The two recorded covers were used on the same day, March 21, 1874. This cancel was unlisted by Weiss, but we have designated a Weiss number that corresponds to the design style. This cover was carried on the French Line "Pereire" that arrived at Brest on March 30, 1874 as indicated by the entry backstamp.
