Lot 43
()
1857, 1¢ blue, type Ia (19), position 99L4, incredibly well centered with the perforations virtually clear of the design all around; rich plate 4 color and a finely detailed impression on bright paper, unused without gum, Extremely Fine and choice.
Scott $20,000

QUITE POSSIBLY THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF AN UNUSED TYPE IA IN EXISTENCE CLEARLY SHOWING THE DISTINGUISHING TYPE CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPLETE ORNAMENTS AT THE BOTTOM AND A PARTIAL "BURNISHING" OUT OF THE DESIGN AT THE TOP.

Expertization: 2006 PF Certificate.

Provenance: Little

According to our review of Philatelic Foundation records back to 1945, this is easily the finest unused example of the perforated 1¢ type Ia recorded. Those same records reveal NO exceptional mint examples with original gum.

Type Ia was produced in only 18 positions, all in the bottom row of Plate 4. Perforations are typically cutting into the design at top and/or bottom because plates 1-4 were not laid out with sufficient space between the stamps to accommodate perforations.

Lot 44
o
1857, 1¢ blue, type Ia (19), position 99L4, fresh and virtually perfectly centered with ball ornaments clearly visible at bottom, stunning deep color, faint black cancel; Extremely Fine.
Scott $10,000

AN EXCEPTIONAL PERFORATED TYPE IA FROM PLATE 4 WITH PERFORATIONS THAT ARE ALMOST CLEAR AT TOP AND BOTTOM, ALLOWING THE TYPE CHARACTERISTICS TO BE PLAINLY VISIBLE AND POSSESSING PROOFLIKE COLOR AND FRESHNESS AS WELL.

Expertization: 2004 PF Certificate.

The bottom row of the short-lived plate 4 perforated presents one of the greatest frustrations for the 1¢ collector. This bottom row is the only row that produced the type Ia stamps (18 positions out of a possible 2000), the most striking feature of which is the complete design at the bottom. Yet in almost every case the perforations at the bottom cut away these characteristics because the perforating machine were not adjusted to allow for the larger design of the bottom row stamps.

Lot 45
()
1857, 1¢ blue, types Ic & III (19b, 21), combination pair, positions 47-48L4, exceptionally well centered with design characteristics clearly showing, deep rich color and a strong impression, unused without gum, Extremely Fine and choice. Listed but not priced as a pair.
Scott $8,900 as singles

A MAGNIFICENT EXAMPLE OF THIS EXCEPTIONALLY RARE UNUSED COMBINATION PAIR—QUITE LIKELY THE FINEST EXTANT.

Expertization: 1999 PSE and 2002 PF Certificates.

There are only six positions on the plate that will yield a se-tenant pair of types Ic and III. Because the clichés were closely placed on the plate, most multiples have perforations impinging on the key parts of the design, making positive identification very difficult.

AN EXQUISITE EXAMPLE OF THE TYPE II 5¢ BROWN, A STAMP THAT IS VIRTUALLY NEVER SEEN THIS CHOICE.

Expertization: 1984, 1995 & 2009 PF Certificates.

Provenance: Caspary, Whitman

By the time the Civil war brought about the demonetization of the 1857-61 issue, the type II 5¢ brown had been replaced by the 5¢ orange brown in Post Office stocks. So where as the 5¢ orange brown is very difficult to find in choice used condition (see above lot), the 5¢ brown is virtually non-existent in choice mint condition.
