Kip in Amoy, China, paying a very scarce triple 45¢ British Mail rate via Southampton, red "N. York Br. Pkt. Paid, Feb 16" exchange office c.d.s., red pencil "3" and "96" credit markings in the same hand, red London PAID transit c.d.s. (Feb 27), backstamped Hong Kong (Apr 9); couple 30¢ with tiny faults, cover with trivial corner repair, a Very Fine and at top three-color franking.

Aug. 29/ 65, Nagasaki"; right edge neatly repaired, fresh, Very Fine appearance; especially desirable with the Japanese connection; includes the original 3-page family letter. The 54¢ franking was a 1¢ overpayment of the 53¢ British Mail rate to China via Marseilles.

Pkt., Jan 8" exchange office c.d.s. on reverse, manuscript "96" credit and large fancy "2" (indicating double), red London PAID transit c.d.s. (Jan 25) with "1d" local charge, backstamped Hong Kong (Mar 12); a Very Fine cover from the Heard correspondence. The $1.14 franking is an 8¢ overpayment of the 53¢ British Mail rate via Marseilles. It may have been a misinterpretation of the obsolete rate of Dec. 1861 - 51¢/57¢ (¼oz./½oz.).

(Aug 1) and red crayon "2" (double rate) and three different manuscript credits: "68" corrected to "48" and finally to "96", backstamped Shanghai (Sep 26); stamp with a couple slightly short perfs, still Very Fine.

A HANDSOME AND IMPORTANT USAGE, ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS COVERS FROM THE AUGUSTINE HEARD FIND.

The rate was 53¢ per half ounce (a total of $1.06) via Marseilles; the 16¢ deficiency would have been paid by the addressee. Had the cover been routed via Southampton, where the rate was 45¢ per half ounce, the 90¢ stamp would have satisfied full prepayment.
