Lot 95
o
1869, 3¢ ultramarine, without grill (114a), rich color, three stroke pen cancel, original gum, hinge remnant. Fine.
Scott $18,000

ONE OF ONLY TWO CERTIFIED USED EXAMPLES OF THE 3¢ 1869 ON REGULAR PAPER WITHOUT GRILL. THE OTHER IS ON COVER.

Expertization: 1994 P.F. Certificate.

The Scott catalogue states in a footnote under #114 that "#114a used on normal paper (is)…. unique". the example they reference is the on cover single with a 2011 certificate (#483098). For some reason the editors missed this example. We have informed them of the omission.

THIS IS ONE OF TWO CERTIFIED EXAMPLES OF THE RARE GRAY PAPER VARIEY WITHOUT GRILL, AND THE ONLY ONE ON COVER, THE OTHER BEING AN ON PIECE STRIP OF THREE.

Expertization: 1991 P.F. Certificate.

The Scott Catalogue states in the same footnote referenced in the previous lot that "the 114a used on gray paper (is)…unique" citing the above mentioned strip of three as the unique example. Once again, we have no idea why this was missed, and the editors have been informed of this omission as well.
