(FX-BA2), handstamped "BALTIMORE" label on 1¢ entire from New York to Montevideo, Uruguay, uprated with two 2¢ & a 15¢ Bank Note (213, 189), toned perfs, tied by New York Station "P" ovals with matching "Registered" postmark, Jun 2, 1888, New York exchange office registry label and Montevideo receiver (26 Jul) all on front; on reverse New York Reg'y Div. oval (Jun 2 & 4), magenta straightline "BALTO MD. JUN 12 1(888)" and Rio de Janeiro transit c.d.s. (Jul 13); small part of top flap missing where remainder of Baltimore straightline would have been. Otherwise F.-V.F. and exceedingly rare.

Lot 193

Honolulu, Hawaii (FX-HO1 var.), registration no. "2866" applied with a manual numbering machine, on a fabulous registered round-the-world coveroriginating in New York City on June 17, 1903 and traveling through 14 cities in 11 countries, winding up back in New York on June 14, 1904; also present are exchange office registry labels from San Francisco, Hong Kong & British Guiana. As would be expected, despite being a heavy, linen-lined envelope (about 12" x 5"), the cover is somewhat battered, as are some of the stamps. It is, nonetheless, quite a remarkable piece of postal history.predating by many years the proliferation of such covers after the introduction of round-the-world airmail. One of only 7 known Honolulu labels.

Identifiable 1903 postmarks are New York City (Jun 17), St. John's, Newfoundland (Jun 6), Vancouver, B.C. (Jul 2 & 7), San Francisco (Jul 10), Christchurch & Auckland, N.Z. (Aug 6/11), Honolulu (Aug 25), Hong Kong (Sep 23). Then, in 1904, after a delay of more than four months, The cover wnet to Hong Kong (Feb 4), Colombo, Ceylon (Mar 5), Johannesburg, Transvaal (Apr 3, 4, 6, 9), Batavia & Soerabaja, Dutch Indies (Apr 15, 17), London & Fulham, England (Apr 30/May 6), Georgetown, Br. Guiana (Jun 2) and back to New York City (Jun 14). It was re-addressed and posted in every country but Ceylon (Hawaii using U.S. stamps and Vancouver using Canadian.

(FX-JA2), used on 1900 cover from Yokohama, Japan to Havana, Cuba, franked with 8s & 10s stamps on a 2s stamped envelope tied by Japanese c.d.s.s with two Yokohama exchange office registry labels, one in Japanese, the other in English, all other markings on reverse: Yokohama (Jul 5), San Francisco (Aug 4) Jacksonville (Aug 12) and Havana (Aug 15, 2 different); light all-over toning. Otherwise Very Fine.

All stamps were applied in Samoa, which was not yet a member of the U.P.U. The Samoan stamps paid the local registry fee and postage to the U.S., while the U.S stamps paid the U.S. 8¢ registry fee and the 5¢ U.P.U. letter rate. This was the last mail requiring mixed franking prior to Samoa's admission to the U.P.U.

Tampa, Fla. (FX-TP2), on 1901 cover from Minneapolis to Trinidad, Cuba, franked with 10¢ Type II (283), postmarked Minneapolis (Dec 4), backstamped Havana (Dec 10) and Trinidad (Dec 13); unfortunately the top flap and left side flap are missing, which is apparently where the Tampa registry postmark resided. Otherwise Fine.

This is a second example of the previously unrecorded Tampa exchange office label, the other, as per Scott, "is held in the collection of a historical society and is not available to collectors."
