1851, 1¢ blue, type Ib (5A), position 6R1E, mostly large margins all around, part sheet margin at top. Unobtrusive light town postmark leaves the type characteristics quite visible. Couple tiny thins. Choice Very Fine appearance.

A MOST ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE TYPE 1B, FROM ONE OF THE TWO BEST POSITIONS.

Of the 1,000 plate positions that produced the 1¢ imperforates, only six produced type 1b stamps, those being positions 3-6 and 8-9 on the right pane of Plate 1E. Positions 6 and 8 are considered the best examples of the type.

1851, 1¢ blue, type Ia (6), position 97L4 "curl on shoulder" variety, large margins, including part sheet margin at bottom to just in at top. Faintly cancelled (appears unused). Accompanying certificate states "minor surface scraping… and light toning" both of which are imperceptible. Otherwise Fine, a most attractive example of the rare Type 1a.

1851, 1¢ blue, type II (7), original gum, lightly hinged, a matchless upper right corner sheet margin single, position 10L2 with full top and right sheet margins and large portions of the adjacent stamps at left and bottom; additionally, the stamp features bright color and a prooflike impression. A marveously fresh and absolutely Superb gem. SMQ $19,000 for a regular 100.
