(Civil War) The Battle of Corinth, Grant Splits the South, 6/8/62 letter with printed letterhead "United We Stand, Divided We Fall", datelined "In camp E. of Corinth 2 miles Miss. June 8th, 1862", lengthy and newsworthy letter reporting on the battle of Corinth… "Corinth is quite a busness place or has been but the rebels destroyed the best of it, burned one building that had their ammunition in there is about 2,000 cannon balls…", etc., with original cover to Ohio, multi-colored patriotic label at left, 3¢ (65) tied by partial Cairo, Ill 6/16/(62) dcds, Very Fine cover, fascinating and easily read letter.

(Civil War) C.S.A. Conspiracy, lengthy and easily readable 18 page letter: (page 5)… "you have doubtlessly been told. of our great military preparations against a rebel attack by way of Canada and the Lake…. There was no doubt a plot in Canada, originating at Richmond, to seize vessels on Lake Erie and then make a decent on Johnson's Island and release the Rebels there confined… but the alarm has had one good effect— it has given the government an opportunity to put the Lake cities in a state of defence, so that they may be able to resist, if not a Rebel, a British and Canadian attack, which will doubtless sometime be made", Very Fine, excellent historical content.

(Civil War) Slavery, 1856 Slave Agents Letter "I want a good permanent home for my servant girl 'Lizzie', a yellow girl about 14 years. I want her employer to deal strictly with her; to require her to be obedient and respectful…. if after trial the girl suites and is taken in for 6 or 12 months (not life) her employer will be required to furnish and see that she is nice and suitably clothed. The wage you will arrange; the agreement I will make,"; the letter continues-"the bearer is a slave belonging to my uncle.the above note is his. if you think you wil take her, please lt me know by her." top one inch of document separated and hinge reattached, bottom one inch separated, still Fine and unusual ephemera.

(Civil War Slavery) Charleston, S.C., "SERVANT", Slave Identification Tag, clearly punched 1828 51 x 51mm copper tag "Charleston/1828/SERVANT/No. 1527". "Lafar" maker's mark punched on reverse, round hole at top for suspending around the neck of the slave, natural patina and some green verdigris, Fine and rare.

Although the practice of hiring out slaves was commonplace, Charleston was the only town that required that these slaves wear tags and that the owners be licensed for them.

Mills; "Soldier's Vote" envelope franked with 3¢ (65) tied by Washington, DC 10/29/64 dcds, both envelopes slightly reduced and with light toning in lower left corner, otherwise Fine.

Davis, Jefferson (1808-1889), Only President of the Confederate States, U.S. Representative and Senator from Mississippi, Secretary of War under Franklin Pierce, autograph cover addressed "For Mrs. Varina Davis, Augusta Georgia, 3¼" x 5¾" (Fortress Monroe, Virginia), additional address, also in Davis' hand "to Hon. J. Speed/U.S. Attorney General, Washington D.C.", also a pencil inscription in an unknown hand, was erased after rec by J.S., cover tear at left, light toning, Very Good. P.O.W. covers from Davis are rare!

The cover was most likely mailed prior to May 1866 when Varina Davis moved to Fortress Monroe.

Davis, Jefferson (1808-1889), Only President of the Confederate States, U.S. Representative and Senator from Mississippi, Secretary of War under Franklin Pierce, autograph letter signed, three pages on two adjoining sheets 4¾" x 8", December 20, 1870, Memphis Tenn., writing to T.G. Wharton Esquire, seeking his help in recovering monies that he lost during the war, in part, "At the time of my last visit to you I asked your near neighbor Col. Stewart if he could give me any information in regard to a transaction with his Bank in 1862-3 he informed that his books had been destroyed and his memory did not serve in such cases but that his cashier whose name he mentioned might remember about it." ".so I apply to you to seek for me at least the relief of knowing that nothing can be learned." "I think there were two deposits one of three thousand dollars and another of nine thousand dollars. I have lost all my papers and the same befell the papers which my Brother took with him to Ala.", folds, one through one letter of signature and an ink smear at end of signature, couple small tape remnants on reverse, a little toning, otherwise Very Good.

Davis was wiped out by the war and lived on charity at the end.

Jefferson Davis", three pages on two adjoining sheets, mourning stationery, 4"x6" Narragansset Pier R.I., Apr 9, 1891 to Miss Lanigan, in part, "Very sorry to hear you have been ill and wish you would come down to 'These Parts' and get a whiff of cool sea air." ".if you will (read) next Sundays World you will there see a review of mine. nothing to be proud of but is one of my pot boilers." Some abrasions on black borders, pencil notation in another hand, otherwise Very Good and clearly written and signed.

Davis, Varina (1826-1906), Second Wife of Jefferson Davis, the CSA's Only First Lady and was Her Husband's Personal Secretary, often writing and Signing His Letters, autograph letter signed "Varina Anne Davis", 2 pages on two adjoining sheets 4½" x 7", no date, accompanying mailing envelope would appear to be mid 1890s, begins with "The name Daughter of the Confederacy was bestowed upon me by General John B. Gordon." and then she explains why she will not part with any of her husband's letters, light toning but quite legible, VG.

Lee, Robert E (1807-1870), Commander of the Confederate States Army, American Military Officer Including Military Engineer, autograph letter signed as Military Engineer, 7¾" x 9¾", one sheet, Baltimore, March 16, 1851, the letter was written when then brevet Colonel Lee was overseeing construction of Fort Carroll near Baltimore, Lee writes, not without some humor, in part, "I m obliged to you for your letter of the 12th. I must however decline the services of Capt Kidds skipper. He does not take into consideration the difference of my employment & that in which he has been engaged. We bury treasure instead of raising it. The difference in profits you perceive is striking. My chief overseer gets only $3 per day. $2.50 per day is the highest I can give for a [S. overseer, & perhaps will therefore have to turn diver myself. I have offered $2 per day for Bellman, but do not know whether I can get them. I however expect to get a man to take charge of the Bell for $2.50 per day.

If you come across any good Bellman please let me know.

Zook, COL 57th NY", three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7¾" x 10", Camp California February 20, 1862, Zook writes to Dr. Samuel Oakley Van der Poel, Surgeon General of New York to request promoting Dr. McKim to full surgeon. he adds a postscript, and put his initials "S.K.Z." minor folds, negligible splits, fresh and Fine.
