First Day of the Union Occupation of New Orleans, Fascinating first-person Soldier's letter written by Josiah R. Kinsman to his mother in Athens, Me., headed "Head Quarters Dept of the Gulf, on board-the Steamer 'MISSISSIPPI', Head of the Passes Mississippi River, April 29, 1862, in part [spelling and lack of punctuation as written]:
"Today our fleet had an engagement with the Forts Jackson & St. Phillip & pased the forts and proceded on up the river to New Orleans leaving forts unsurrendered then we moved down the river and out into the Gulf with the land forces and up in the rear of the forts and commenced to land and was proceeding with the landing when yesterday afternoon seeing us from the forts they mutinied shot one of their officers and at five in the afternoon they surrendered to our troops on this morning we started down the Gulf and up the river to where we now are The General [Admiral Farragut] has gone up to New Orleans on a gunboat and is expected down tonight our fleet is lying in front of the city and it is said to be surrendered to the gun boats and if so I suppose we shall go up tomorrow and take possession wont that be humiliating to the proud Southerners?"

Favrot, Delta Rifles, 4th Regt. La. Volunteers, Ship Island (Miss.), "Via Mississippi City"; reduced just a tad at the left with heavy vertical file fold, top flap missing and slight edge flaws.

About a month after this cover was sent, the Confederate Army abandoned the island. Favrot's Delta Rifles were moved north and Connecticut's "Irish Regiment" took over the island, establishing a prison for Confederate P.O.W.s. One of the first African-American regiments, the 2nd Regiment, Louisiana Native Guard, was formed here.

Dark area indicating a previous adhesive stamp in the upper right corner explained as having come from the Paul Freeland collection where stamps that had been applied by an oldtime dealer, as "enhancements", had been removed.

Chattanooga was occupied by the Union on September 9, 1863, and control passed from one side to the other in the months that followed. Whenever the city was in Union hands, Confederate mail was handled by an underground postal system.

F.-V.F. Signed on the reverse by Stanley Ashbrook with his notation, "In my opinion this 30¢ rate was a WRAPPER RATE of 3x10¢…is genuine - probably 1864." In our opinion, owing to the apparent original size of the envelope, this is simply a triple 10¢ rate for 1-1½ ounces.
