Letter Express, 1844, 5¢ black on pink (96L1), horizontal pair, ample to large margins, each with manuscript. "X" cancel on 1844 folded letter to New York City, prepaying 12 1/2c (2 stamps) rate, portion of contents removed but docketing indicate s Detroit, pencil "2" for local delivery charge at top left and matching "W" at bottom, the latter possibly indicating origin west of Buffalo, where the Letter Express connected with Pomeroy's for service to New York (and who arranged for local delivery with Boyd's); right stamp with tiny margin tear at R. and very trivial purple ink mark at top left, still Very Fine, rare multiple.
