Lot 152

Baton Rouge, La., 1861, 5¢ green & carmine (11X2), large margins to barely shaved at the upper right, tied by a mostly clear Baton Rouge c.d.s., Aug 5, 1861, on a cover to Capt. H.M. Favrot, Delta Rifles, 4th Regt. La. Volunteers, Ship Island (Miss.), "Via Mississippi City"; reduced just a tad at the left with heavy vertical file fold, top flap missing and slight edge flaws.
Scott $5,000

About a month after this cover was sent, the Confederate Army abandoned the island. Favrot's Delta Rifles were moved north and Connecticut's "Irish Regiment" took over the island, establishing a prison for Confederate P.O.W.s. One of the first African-American regiments, the 2nd Regiment, Louisiana Native Guard, was formed here.
