Canada, Stampless folded letter to England, from St. Vincent, U.C. where it was postmarked Jan 7, 1856, with red straight line "PAID" and manuscript "2/4" rate, the rate by U.S. packet, and black straight line "REGISTERED" with manuscript "N6" due for U.K. registry fee and handstamp "MORE/TO/PAY" in circle, backstamped in transit at Collingwood Harbor Jan 7 and Toronto Jan 8, red British transit on back and red Petersfield (final destination) c.d.s. on front on Feb 1; cosmetically refolded at top and bottom, otherwise Very Fine.

During the Crimean War many Cunard steamers were employed on war duty. Consequently, Cunard mail packets only sailed from Boston every two weeks instead of every week. Thus, mail to the U.K. was often directed to be sent by U.S. packet via New York.
