Lot 67

Canada, 1857, 7½d green and 3d red, two singles of each (9, 4), one 7½d with four margins, the other 3½ the two 3d with four and three margins respectively, tied by Barrie 4-ring "1" on mourning cover from Barrie, C.W. to London, England, postmarked partly struck Barrie c.d.s., Nov 21, 1857, and red straight line "REGISTERED", manuscript "6" due and red British crowned "REGISTERED", backstamped Toronto Nov 22 and London Dec 7; fresh and Very Fine, a unique franking and the only example of this rate in existence.
Estimate 30,000 - 40,000

Provenance: Wellburn, Lubke. Illustrated in Boggs, page 159

This cover was rated at double the 10d rate by British packet plus 1d for registration within Canada. There was no registry fee available for mail to England, hence the "6" (d) due, the British registry fee, to be paid by the addressee. This rate would normally have been paid by two 10d blues with the registry fee paid in cash but apparently there were no 10d stamps available in Barrie at the time.

Realized $60,000
