Lot 70

Canada, 1859, 12½¢ yellow green (18), horizontal pair, barely tied by two partial strikes Hamilton, U.C. broken circle, March 20 1861, on cover to Peebles, Scotland, postmarked at lower left by a third clearly struck Hamilton with a black straight line "REGISTERED", black 4-line Glasgow Packet transit postmark., April 6, and red boxed "REGISTERED/(AT GLASGOW)", backstamped Edinburgh and Peebles, also on April 6; a Very Fine.
Estimate 2,000 - 3,000

Expertization: 1979 Greene Certificate.

This could be either a double rate cover with the 12½¢ registry fee paid in cash or a single rate cover with both the postage and the fee paid with stamps. It is one of nine such frankings recorded to the U.K.

The Hamilton "REGISTERED" handstamp indicates that the 12½¢ registry fee had been prepaid but apparently the postmaster at Peebles marked the cover with a manuscript "6" in an attempt to collect an additional 6d for the U.K. registry fee.

Realized $3,000
