Lot 8

Canada, 1852, 3d red, vertical strip of four (4), tied by target cancels on blue folded cover from Quebec to Saint John, N.B., postmarked red Quebec broken circle May 31, 1853, with manuscript "Money Letter" but no handstamp, backstamped Woodstock, N.B. June 7 and St. John June 8; strip has three margins, though close at right, and is just touching at the top, a Fine quadruple rate cover. The only recorded example of this franking and this rate to New Brunswick.
Estimate 7,500 - 10,000

Provenance: Nickle

New Brunswick initiated its own registered mail system in July of 1852 and most of their registered letters were enclosed in green wrapper-receipts and received no backstamps. The fact that this cover bears backstamps of two different New Brunswick cities strongly suggests that it was handled as ordinary mail.
