Lot 459

Southern Rhodesia, 1952 (May 5) cover from Nyazue to Lower Gwelo, bearing ½d pair cancelled by depature c.d.s. and Postage Due 1951 "Southern / Rhodesia" overprint 3d violet and 4d dull gray green (S.G. D2, D6) tied by "Lower Gwelo/S. Rhodesia" c.d.s., the 4d was normally issued in blue but a few examples of the green stamp were inadvertently overprinted and distributed to the post offices at Fort Victoria and Gwelo, very fine and a modern postal history rarity, this cover represents part of a bulk charge for several letters sent by a missionary group which purposely underfranked the letters on account of the high level of non-response by the natives to whom these envelopes were given for corresponding with the mission, less than ten such covers recorded with the Due 4d green.
