China, 1886 (Nov. 29) cover from Newington, Conn. to "Pekin, China," missent to Perkins, California, franked with 2¢ brown at domestic rate only, ornamental "Held for/Postage" handstamp applied at San Francisco once envelope posted on to its proper destination, over which 1¢ and 2¢ affixed by the postmaster to make up proper postage ("Short Paid- Deficit 3 Cents/Paid by Wm. Dougherty, Asst./P.M. San Francisco" handstamp in violet on reverse), oval "U.S. Postal Agency/Shanghai" date stamp in violet and "Customs/Shanghai" c.d.s. on reverse, with extremely fine strike of framed "To Pay" handstamp in red on front applied at Shanghai for domestic postage for mail to Northern China, stamps have some faults, one of only three examples of this handstamp we record on mail originating from the U.S.A.
