China, 1904 (Sept. 26) cover carried privately from England and posted in Shanghai at the local printed matter rate, ½c cancelled by native c.d.s., showing unframed "T" handstamp and "Shanghai/Local Post" c.d.s. adjacent, endorsed in manuscript "Originated in England L/167" overstruck by oval "District Inspector/Shanghai" date stamp in violet, therefore uprated to unpaid foreign letter with "Postage Due" overprint. ½c, 2c block of four and 10c applied on reverse to make up the 19 cents rate (9½c postage plus the equivalent in fines for what was considered an attempt to defraud the post office; the original ½c franking being credited toward this), envelope creased in places not affecting the stamps, remarkable usage.
